A remarkable turn of events has led to the capture of one of Ecuador's most notorious drug lords, José Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as Fito. He was apprehended by a specialized police and military unit following a year-long escape after breaking out of prison. President Daniel Noboa announced the successful operation on the social media platform X.

Fito, the leader of the powerful criminal organization Los Choneros, is facing extradition to the United States, where he has been charged with drug and weapons offenses in New York. His arrest took place in Manta, a city on Ecuador's western coast, where he was found in an underground bunker within a residential property. Reports indicate that his three-year-old daughter inadvertently revealed his hiding spot.

The operation to apprehend Fito lasted approximately ten hours, culminating in his capture as he lay on the ground while officers placed him in handcuffs.
