The Eclipse IDE has launched its latest version, 2025-03, enhancing support for C++23 standards and offering preliminary compatibility with Java 24, set to be officially released shortly.
This update introduces significant improvements aimed at developers working with both C++ and Java. The C/C++ development environment now features a new editor based on the Clang compiler frontend, which supports modern standards like C++23. This new editor is designed to facilitate the coding experience while ensuring compatibility with the latest programming practices.
For Java developers, the IDE provides an extension available through the Eclipse Marketplace, which offers early support for Java 24. This extension acts as a precursor to the full integration expected in the June 2025 release of the IDE. Notably, debugging capabilities have been enhanced, allowing developers to compare lists and variable contents regardless of the Java version being used. Moreover, the Java compiler has seen optimizations that may double its speed in specific scenarios and improvements have been made to the integration of the Maven build tool.
In addition to these language-specific updates, the Eclipse platform itself has undergone general enhancements. The interface has been refreshed to improve usability, including a new light mode that features a softer background in the file tree. Furthermore, for Windows users, the experimental feature for scaling multiple windows on displays with varying resolutions has been improved, ensuring a more consistent user experience.
For developers interested in upgrading or downloading the latest version, Eclipse offers ten different extensible packages tailored for various development needs across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms. Each package is equipped with essential tools, including Java 21 and Git, alongside Maven and Gradle in the Java IDE bundles. Users can easily install the Eclipse IDE through the Eclipse Installer or download it as a ZIP file. Existing users of the Eclipse IDE can update their software via the built-in update feature.
For detailed information about this release and the new features included, users can refer to the official Eclipse IDE website.
