EA Announces Studio Closure and Cancellation of 'Black Panther' Game

Fri 30th May, 2025

Electronic Arts (EA) has made the decision to close its Cliffhanger Games studio, which was established to develop a video game centered around the Marvel superhero, Black Panther. This announcement comes as part of a series of layoffs within the company, although the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed.

The Black Panther game, originally announced in 2023 as an innovative action-adventure title with a single-player focus, has been officially canceled. No substantial promotional material had been released for the game beyond a logo, raising questions about its development progress.

Cliffhanger Games was formed with a team that included veterans from notable studios, including Monolith Productions, known for its work on the acclaimed Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor series. The studio's personnel had previously contributed to major titles such as Halo Infinite, God of War, and Call of Duty.

In addition to the closure of Cliffhanger Games, EA is reportedly laying off employees from various other teams, including its mobile gaming division. These layoffs follow multiple rounds of workforce reductions over recent months. Earlier in May, EA confirmed job cuts at Codemasters, a racing game developer acquired for $1.2 billion in 2021. Furthermore, the company has halted development on a new installment in the Titanfall franchise at Respawn Entertainment.

EA has justified these layoffs by citing a renewed focus on its core gaming formats and a desire to concentrate creative efforts on its primary growth areas. The company has indicated that it will offer affected developers opportunities to transition to other roles within EA. Notably, staff from BioWare, a studio known for its role-playing games, have already been reassigned to assist with EA's sports titles.

As the gaming industry continues to face challenges and market shifts, EA's decisions reflect broader trends affecting game development and studio management. The company's strategic pivot aims to streamline operations and enhance the viability of its most successful franchises.
