Duisburg Police Pursue Driver Under the Influence of Laughing Gas

Thu 17th Jul, 2025

Duisburg, Germany - A dramatic police chase unfolded in Duisburg during the early hours of July 15, 2025, when officers attempted to stop a 20-year-old driver for not wearing his seatbelt. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, switched off his headlights, and sped away, causing significant chaos on the roads.

The incident occurred around 2:00 AM on Weseler Straße, where the driver, evading capture, recklessly maneuvered through the streets, swerving onto sidewalks and traffic islands. His reckless driving spree continued until he was ultimately cornered in Wackerdonkstraße, a dead-end street.

Upon stopping, the driver appeared to be under the influence of a substance. He consented to a voluntary alcohol and drug test, which returned negative results. However, police discovered a canister of laughing gas in the footwell of his vehicle, leading to the confiscation of both the canister and his driver's license.

The Ford Fiesta was towed to a secure impound lot, and a blood sample was taken at the Hamborn police station to investigate the potential use of laughing gas. The Duisburg traffic department is now conducting an investigation into the situation, and the young driver faces the prospect of legal proceedings.

The Duisburg Police Department has issued a warning regarding the dangers of laughing gas, which is frequently misperceived as a harmless party substance. They emphasize that it can lead to oxygen deprivation in the brain and significantly impair driving abilities.
