A bus driver in Lichtenberg suffered serious injuries after being attacked with a knife by a drunken passenger. The incident took place on a Sunday evening when the driver, aged 53, denied entry to a 45-year-old man and his companion at the Magdalenenstraße U-Bahn station due to their intoxicated state. Despite the refusal, the two men boarded the bus.
As the bus driver took a break at the intersection of Frankfurter Allee and Möllendorffstraße, a verbal confrontation escalated. During this altercation, the intoxicated passenger allegedly used a knife to inflict a wound on the driver's upper arm. Emergency services promptly transported the injured driver to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
The police apprehended the suspected assailant at the scene, where a breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 1.2 promille. Additionally, it was reported that the man verbally abused a fellow passenger during the bus ride and later directed insults at a police officer upon their arrival. Following the incident, he was placed in police custody but was released after the necessary procedures were completed.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the police's specialized unit handling the case. The BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) expressed their concern regarding the situation, stating they are deeply affected by the attack on their colleague and are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation.
Moreover, there is an ongoing inquiry into the actions of the bus driver, as the arrested individual claimed that he had been assaulted by the driver prior to the stabbing. The BVG has emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of their employees and addressing any violence against them.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of aggression against public transport workers, prompting calls for increased security measures and support for those in the frontline of public service.
