Drunken Dispute Leads to Fatality from Crossbow Shooting

The accused, 25-year-old Martin Z., is facing charges of manslaughter in connection with the shooting. During the court proceedings at the Erfurt District Court, it was revealed that the altercation began when Dominik S. aggressively approached Martin Z. with a sledgehammer shortly after midnight. In response, Martin Z. discharged his crossbow, initially injuring Dominik S. in the leg.

Following this, Dominik S. attempted to retreat to his vehicle, but Martin Z. fired a second shot, which struck him in the left chest area. The injuries from this shot were fatal, leading to Dominik S.'s death from internal bleeding at the scene. The prosecutor emphasized that while the act resulted in a death, it did not classify Martin Z. as a murderer due to the circumstances surrounding the event.

Investigators noted that Martin Z. had a blood alcohol concentration of 2.1 per mille at the time of the incident, indicating substantial intoxication. The weapon used in the crime was a Barnett Recruit XP crossbow, which is legally available for purchase without a weapons license for individuals over 18 years of age. The crossbow can discharge projectiles at speeds of up to 93 meters per second, raising concerns about the accessibility of such weapons.

An expert from the Thuringian State Criminal Police Office provided insights into the mechanics of the crossbow, clarifying that it requires manual operation to load and fire, thereby ruling out accidental discharge as a possibility. Martin Z. chose to remain silent during the initial stages of the trial but indicated through his attorney that he would provide a personal account in the next hearing scheduled for June 4.
