Drone Crash Sparks Field Fire in Schleswig-Holstein

A drone accident in Schleswig-Holstein has resulted in a fire on agricultural land, following a collision with a power line. The incident occurred around 10:20 AM, approximately eight kilometers east of Preetz, when the drone, reportedly impacted by a gust of wind, made an emergency landing. According to the company Jedsy, which operates the drone, a 'digital parachute' deployed as part of the safety mechanism, causing the drone to descend rapidly and land vertically without the pilot's control.

The power line was damaged but not severed, resulting in sparks that ignited the nearby field. Fortunately, local volunteer fire brigades responded swiftly, managing to contain the blaze without any injuries reported.

The drone involved is a transport model used for delivering medical samples, as confirmed by Jedsy's founder, Herbert Weirather. The Swiss-based company specializes in developing drone solutions for transporting medical samples, medications, and other time-sensitive goods. This specific type of drone has been operational since the beginning of the year, facilitating deliveries between hospitals in the Plön and Stormarn districts. At the time of the accident, the drone was not carrying any cargo.

According to Weirather, the pilot initiated the emergency landing after the drone detected another aircraft within its safety radius. Emphasizing the importance of safety, he noted that their systems are designed with redundancy and that the pilot ensured compliance with the required separation distances from other air traffic. Following the incident, authorities and SH Netz GmbH have been engaged to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The aviation authority has been notified, but no formal complaint has been filed.
