Driver Hits Children Group; Marijuana Discovered in Vehicle

A significant incident occurred in Berlin-Wedding when a vehicle ran a red light, striking a group of children participating in a holiday program. The driver, a 20-year-old man, is suspected of drug use following the accident, as authorities reported finding a considerable amount of marijuana in his possession.

According to police reports, the accident happened around 12:50 PM on Thursday. The children, accompanied by a caregiver, were crossing the street at a green pedestrian signal when the driver failed to stop for the red light. Despite attempts to brake, the vehicle collided with the group.

The caregiver, a 63-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Three children, aged eight and eleven, suffered minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital for precautionary checks, while three others received on-site medical attention.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the driver's actions. A blood sample was taken to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved, with results expected in the following week. The police have noted that the quantity of marijuana found, approximately 90 grams, exceeds the typical personal use amount, indicating potential implications for the driver.

The driver's license has been confiscated, and he is under investigation for negligent bodily harm. If confirmed that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, additional charges related to endangerment of public safety could be applied.

In total, the group consisted of 22 individuals, including 18 children and four caregivers. Emergency responders handled the situation, providing care for those affected. While some children were treated and released, the condition of the caregiver remains uncertain.
