In a concerning incident on May 3, 2025, a 44-year-old man from Erkrath experienced a hazardous moment while driving his Audi Q7 on Bergische Allee in Hochdahl. Reportedly, the driver lost control of his vehicle around 5:45 AM due to a condition known as micro-sleep, which caused him to briefly fall asleep at the wheel.
The Audi veered off the roadway and collided violently with a tree, resulting in the vehicle overturning and coming to rest on its side. Miraculously, despite the severity of the crash, the driver sustained only minor injuries and was able to extricate himself from the wreckage without assistance.
Emergency services were alerted and promptly arrived on the scene. The driver was subsequently transported to a local hospital for outpatient treatment of his injuries. The crash caused extensive damage to the Audi, which was deemed a total loss, while the tree involved suffered significant harm, including uprooting.
Authorities assessed the total damages from the incident to exceed EUR47,000. In light of the circumstances, the police have initiated proceedings against the driver for endangering road traffic due to the effects of micro-sleep.
