Umpferstedt, Thuringia - Early Saturday morning, emergency responders from the Umpferstedt volunteer fire department arrived at the scene of an accident, fearing the worst. Upon arrival, they discovered that the driver was not in distress but rather asleep inside his overturned Audi.

It appears that the driver had turned a cornfield into an impromptu resting place after losing control of his vehicle. The incident took place shortly after 4:25 AM when the driver, who had previously been noted for excessive alcohol consumption by two firefighters at a nearby event in Mellingen, decided to drive despite his inebriated state.

After traveling approximately five kilometers down the B7 highway, the driver veered off the road and rolled his car into a cornfield. Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries and was able to exit the vehicle on his own once he was awakened by the emergency crew.

In addition to the overturned vehicle, responders found a shattered bottle of Bacardi rum inside the car, indicating the driver's level of intoxication at the time of the crash. Following medical evaluation, the driver was transported to the Apolda clinic under police supervision for a blood test to assess his blood alcohol content.

The fire department managed to secure the vehicle and clear the site of debris, while a towing service was called to remove the damaged Audi. The driver is likely to face significant financial penalties and may also receive a multi-month suspension of his driving privileges.

As the cornfield returns to its usual state, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.
