Sun 24th Aug, 2025

Dresden - A stabbing incident involving a 21-year-old American citizen in a tram in Dresden has caused outrage and concern both locally and in the United States. Reports state that the attack occurred around 12:25 AM on Sunday, as the tram was traveling on Line 7 from Weixdorf to Pennrich, near the well-known Golden Rider statue.

According to police, two men from a group were harassing female passengers when the American intervened in an attempt to protect them. During the ensuing confrontation, he was stabbed by one of the assailants. Following the attack, the perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the victim severely injured.

The injured American was promptly transported to a hospital via ambulance. Police managed to apprehend one of the suspects approximately 700 meters away at another tram stop. This individual, identified as a 21-year-old Syrian national named Majd A., was reportedly fleeing the scene on a rental scooter. Authorities have initiated an investigation into his actions and those of the unidentified accomplice on charges of aggravated bodily harm.

Evidence found inside the tram indicated the severity of the attack, with bloodstains and tissues used by bystanders to stem the bleeding. Initial reports indicated that the victim had sustained a facial wound from a knife. Fortunately, authorities later confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening.

While Majd A. has been detained, sources indicate that he is not the individual responsible for the stabbing. Reports suggest he initially attacked the American with punches before the second suspect returned with a knife, inflicting the critical injuries. Although Majd A. has a history of prior offenses, including violent crimes, he has since been released from custody due to a lack of sufficient grounds for detention according to the prosecutor's office.

Prosecutor Jürgen Schmidt stated that the assessment made by the on-call prosecutor indicated that there were inadequate grounds for detention as the stabbing could not be directly attributed to Majd A. Law enforcement noted that despite his distance from the initial scene, there was no immediate risk of flight, destruction of evidence, or reoffending since he has a stable residence.

Witness reports suggest that the altercation began with a physical confrontation where the American was struck before the knife attack took place. The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with efforts to locate the second suspect still ongoing. Surveillance footage from the tram is being reviewed to assist in the investigation.

As the search for the second suspect continues, police are urging any witnesses to come forward, particularly the numerous passengers who were aboard the tram during the incident. The weapon used in the attack has not been recovered, leading to heightened concern regarding public safety in the area.

Authorities are actively pursuing leads, with the police department in Dresden encouraging anyone with information to contact them directly.
