Vandalism in Central Dortmund: Large Group Paints Landmark Staircase in Borussia Dortmund Colors

A significant act of vandalism occurred overnight in Dortmund when a group of individuals, reportedly supporters of Borussia Dortmund, defaced the well-known Katharinen Steps in the city center. The incident took place near prominent landmarks, including the German Football Museum and the main train station, making it a highly visible act in a busy urban area.

According to security personnel, around 20 to 30 masked individuals gathered on the staircase around midnight. The group proceeded to spray paint the steps in black and yellow, the traditional colors associated with Borussia Dortmund football club. The activity was not only bold but also meticulously documented, as the perpetrators reportedly recorded the event with a drone.

Authorities responded quickly after being alerted by Deutsche Bahn security staff. Upon arrival, most of the group managed to escape, dispersing in various directions. However, police apprehended one suspect, a 29-year-old man from Schwerte, who was found in a nearby vehicle along with the drone believed to have been used to film the incident. The police have since seized the device and are conducting a thorough investigation, gathering evidence and reviewing witness statements to identify additional suspects involved in the act.

The clean-up operation began early the following morning, with specialized teams working to remove the paint from the extensive affected area, which spans approximately 350 square meters. City officials stated that the cleaning efforts are ongoing and may require several days to complete due to the extent of the damage. The estimated cost for the clean-up is around EUR5,000, not including any potential need for additional restoration or resurfacing of the steps.

Beyond the visual impact, the vandalism has raised safety concerns. The spray paint covered important yellow step markings that are crucial for the orientation and safety of visually impaired pedestrians. City representatives emphasized that these markings help prevent accidents and that their obstruction created an immediate hazard, necessitating urgent remedial action.

Investigators believe the choice of black and yellow paint directly links the incident to football supporters, referencing previous similar acts in other Dortmund districts, including Dorstfeld and Kurl, where public infrastructure was also painted in club colors. The police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying additional members of the group responsible for the vandalism.
