Dortmund - On August 3, 2025, a 30-year-old man from Algeria was detained by police at the Dortmund Main Station after traveling without a valid ticket. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM when a train employee alerted authorities about the individual who was aboard the ICE 642 without proper fare.
Upon arrival, police officers conducted a routine check and discovered that the man did not carry any identification. Consequently, they escorted him to the Federal Police station for further investigation. A fingerprint analysis confirmed his identity and revealed that he lacked a legal residency permit in Germany.
During a search, officers found six smartphones in his possession. After receiving an explanation in Arabic, the man admitted that all the devices were stolen. The police seized these phones, which collectively had an estimated value of around EUR5,000. One of the devices had already been reported stolen, while the owners of two others were successfully identified and contacted.
Following the investigation, the individual was issued a preliminary certificate in consultation with the immigration authorities before being released. The Federal Police have since launched an investigation into the case, focusing on serious theft, illegal residency, and fraudulent acquisition of services.
