Direct Train Connections from Germany to London: Plans Take Shape

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

The prospect of direct train travel from Germany to London is becoming increasingly viable. Reports indicate that following a recent cooperation agreement between Eurotunnel operators and British high-speed rail providers, plans for direct train connections from cities like Cologne and Frankfurt to the British capital are advancing.

Currently, travelers from Germany wishing to reach London by train must make at least one transfer, typically in Brussels. According to Deutsche Bahn, there are up to ten daily services that require this transfer. The desire for direct train routes has been expressed for several years, yet until now, only high-speed trains operated by the French-British company Eurostar have traversed the Channel Tunnel.

Getlink, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, has announced its intention to introduce a variety of new destinations in Germany, Switzerland, and France. This initiative coincides with plans to expand London's St Pancras International station, which will significantly increase passenger capacity. The goal is to allow additional competing rail operators to access new routes from London.
