The Deutsche Bahn is set to enhance its international train services by equipping the ICE 3neo for routes to Poland and France. This initiative follows an investment of EUR200 million aimed at ensuring the trains meet the specific operational requirements of these countries.
Currently, the ICE 3neo operates routes to Brussels and Amsterdam, making it compliant with the rail systems of Belgium and the Netherlands. The upcoming modifications will allow up to 32 trains to operate between Berlin and Warsaw, marking a significant first in direct train service between the two capitals.
Siemens Mobility has been tasked with the necessary technical adaptations, which will be implemented during the manufacturing process at the Siemens facility in Krefeld. The approval procedures and production timeline are expected to extend over several years, with the first trains anticipated to receive certification by 2031, and all units scheduled for completion by 2032.
As of now, Deutsche Bahn has ordered a total of 90 ICE 3neo trains from Siemens Mobility, with 29 already delivered. The first train entered service in November 2022, and by June 2024, the ICE 3neo replaced older models on the Frankfurt-Amsterdam and Frankfurt-Brussels routes, resulting in a noticeable reduction in train cancellations.
The adjustments required for compatibility with Polish and French rail systems are significant. For instance, Poland predominantly operates on a 3 kV DC power system, while Germany utilizes a 15 kV AC system at 16.7 Hz. France presents further complexity with two distinct systems: a 25 kV AC system in the north and east, and a 1.5 kV DC system in the south and southwest. Additionally, Poland employs a signal system akin to Germany's Indusi, whereas France uses the TVM system.
The ICE 3neo (model series 408) is designed to reach speeds of up to 320 km/h and can accommodate 439 passengers in a standard configuration or 878 in a double train setup. Each seat is equipped with power outlets, including inductive charging capabilities for smartphones in first-class accommodations. The train has a total weight of 460 tons and generates a power output of 8,000 kW (approximately 10,900 hp).
