Defense Manufacturer Expands Production of Unmanned Surface Vessels in Hamburg

A leading European defense company has announced plans to significantly increase the production of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) at the historic Blohm+Voss shipyard in the Port of Hamburg. The initiative aims to meet growing international demand for maritime drone technology, especially among NATO member states.

According to company representatives, the initial phase will focus on building a limited series of 15 USVs to establish efficient production workflows and validate operational processes. Following this pilot phase, the manufacturer intends to rapidly scale operations, targeting an annual output of up to 200 unmanned boats. Should market demand continue to rise, the company has indicated that a three-shift operation could enable the facility to produce as many as 1,000 vessels per year.

The vessels, known in technical terms as Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), are designed for both remote-controlled and, in future iterations, autonomous operation. The flagship model, identified as the K3 Scout, is being developed through a joint venture with a UK-based technology partner. These versatile boats are engineered to serve a range of applications, spanning both military and civilian sectors. Potential uses include maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, security patrols, and logistical support.

The defense company confirmed that it has already secured contracts from several NATO naval forces. While the specific countries involved have not been disclosed, binding agreements are reportedly in place for the delivery of at least 150 units. The expansion of USV production follows the company's recent acquisition of a prominent marine technology group, which includes the Blohm+Voss shipyard.
