New statistics from the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA) reveal a concerning trend in the pharmacy landscape in Germany. As of mid-2025, there are only 16,803 pharmacies remaining in the country, marking a decrease of 238 since the end of 2024, when the number stood at 17,041. The gap between closures and new openings is widening, with 271 pharmacies shutting down in the first half of 2025 compared to just 33 new establishments.
This decline is part of a larger trend observed over the past five years, during which the total number of pharmacies has decreased by nearly 2,000, equating to a loss of more than 10% (from 18,753 pharmacies in late 2020). The ABDA has indicated that there are no forecasts suggesting an end to this downward trajectory.
ABDA President Thomas Preis highlighted the crucial role that local pharmacies play within the healthcare system, emphasizing that their absence would significantly undermine the medication supply for millions of patients. He noted that the growing gaps in healthcare provision are currently being filled by delivery services. However, especially considering demographic changes and advancements in medicine, the importance of local pharmacies cannot be overstated. They often serve as the primary and sometimes only personal contact for elderly individuals in an increasingly digital healthcare environment.
Preis has articulated the need for comprehensive policy measures to address this crisis, attributing the ongoing issues to years of inadequate funding for pharmacies. He expressed optimism regarding the new government's proposed pharmacy reform law, placing its swift implementation at the top of his priority list.
Furthermore, Preis advocates for a dialogue among stakeholders in the healthcare sector, policy makers, and patients. He pointed out that pharmacists are prepared to contribute to this discussion with a new position paper titled 'Towards a Healthy Future with Pharmacies,' outlining the healthcare responsibilities they are ready to assume, such as vaccinations and preventive care.
