Celebrating 30 Years of the World's Largest Internet Exchange: DE-CIX

In 1995, the DE-CIX (Deutscher Commercial Internet Exchange) began its operations in Frankfurt, Germany, and has since evolved into the largest internet exchange in the world. On June 26, 2025, the organization marks its 30th anniversary, reflecting on three decades of remarkable growth and innovation.

Initially, DE-CIX connected three internet service providers--EUnet from Dortmund, MAZ from Hamburg, and NTG/XLink from Karlsruhe--utilizing 2 megabits per second (Mbps) connections. At that time, this bandwidth was sufficient for the three providers, who together held approximately 90% of the market share in Germany. However, in today's context, where average broadband speeds in Germany exceed 100 Mbps, those early connections seem modest.

The data throughput at DE-CIX has been on a consistent upward trajectory, having approximately doubled in the last five years. A notable peak was reached on November 20, 2024, when the exchange registered a record data transfer rate of 18.11 terabits per second, driven largely by the high demand from online gaming.

In addition to its flagship site in Frankfurt, DE-CIX operates several other exchanges worldwide, including locations in New York, Madrid, and Mumbai. This global network underscores the importance of DE-CIX in facilitating international data exchange and improving internet connectivity.

Historically, before the establishment of DE-CIX, data from German networks often had to be routed through the United States, which introduced latency and inefficiencies. The inception of DE-CIX significantly changed this landscape by providing a local solution for data exchange, enhancing performance and reliability for users.

The DE-CIX project was initiated by the eco Association, which was founded on June 26, 1995, to promote electronic commerce and the internet economy. Since its inception, the organization has been instrumental in shaping the internet infrastructure in Germany and beyond.

As DE-CIX celebrates this significant milestone, it stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of internet connectivity, characterized by rapid advancements in technology and increasing demand for faster, more reliable data transmission.
