A zoo located in Aalborg, Denmark, has initiated a unique program inviting residents to donate their healthy pets as a food source for its carnivorous animals. The Aalborg Zoo aims to replicate the natural food chain within its habitat, emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet for its predators.
The zoo's request specifically targets small animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, and even horses. In an announcement, the zoo stated they are looking for pets that need to be rehomed for various reasons. As an incentive, horse owners who donate their animals may benefit from a tax deduction.
Aalborg Zoo has explained that this initiative will help prevent waste and supports the well-being and natural behaviors of its carnivorous residents. Any animals donated will be humanely euthanized by trained professionals at the facility, a practice that has generated some debate.
Although this call for pet donations has captured media attention worldwide, the zoo's deputy director, Pia Nielsen, noted that such practices are not uncommon in Denmark. She explained that Aalborg Zoo has been feeding its meat-eating animals smaller livestock for many years, and many visitors appreciate the opportunity to contribute to animal welfare.
This approach echoes a similar incident in 2014 when Copenhagen Zoo faced international backlash for euthanizing a healthy giraffe to prevent inbreeding. The Aalborg Zoo, established in 1935, is home to various carnivorous species, including the European lynx, Asiatic lion, Sumatran tiger, and African wild dog, underscoring its commitment to animal care and the natural ecosystem.
As the debate continues over animal care practices in zoos, Aalborg Zoo remains focused on its mission to maintain the health and well-being of its predators while engaging the community in the conversation about wildlife sustenance.
