The Danish Royal Court has provided an update regarding the health status of former Queen Margrethe II, after she recently underwent a medical procedure addressing a cardiac issue at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. The 86-year-old former monarch was admitted to hospital following episodes described as heart spasms, sometimes referred to medically as angina pectoris.
According to the statement released by the Royal Court, Queen Margrethe underwent a balloon angioplasty, a minimally invasive procedure commonly used to treat blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. During this intervention, a small balloon is inserted into the affected artery and then inflated, which helps to widen the vessel and improve blood flow to the heart muscle.
Officials confirmed that the procedure was conducted without complications. The Royal Court noted that Margrethe II is recovering well, though she will remain under medical observation at Rigshospitalet for several more days to ensure her continued stability and to monitor her progress.
Queen Margrethe II has experienced multiple health challenges in recent years. In 2023, she underwent major back surgery, which led to the cancellation of several public appearances. Despite ongoing medical concerns, she continued to participate in selected official events following her recovery.
Earlier in 2024, Margrethe II made the unexpected decision to abdicate the throne after more than five decades as Denmark's reigning monarch. This transition marked the end of her historic tenure and saw the crown passed to her son, King Frederik X. Observers at the time speculated that her health may have played a role in her decision to step down, although no direct confirmation was provided by the palace.
In public appearances prior to her recent hospitalization, the former Queen appeared in good spirits, attending cultural events alongside other members of the royal family. Notably, she was seen at a concert in the courtyard of Fredensborg Palace in April, accompanied by her sister Anne-Marie, King Frederik X, and Queen Mary.
The Royal Court emphasized that Margrethe II continues to hold the title of Queen, despite her abdication. Her medical team remains optimistic about her recovery, and she is expected to resume light duties as her health permits.
The Danish public and international observers continue to express support and well-wishes for the former Queen's full recovery. Updates regarding her condition are being communicated through official channels as they become available.
