Commencing on October 26, 2023, this unprecedented showcase marks the first time that Germany will welcome the iconic works of the renowned artist within its borders.

Among the highlights of this momentous exhibition stands Damien Hirst's "For the Love of God" (2007), a platinum cast of a human skull adorned with a staggering 8,601 diamonds. Revered for its powerful symbolism, the artwork encapsulates Hirst's profound fascination with diamonds, epitomizing their intrinsic volatility in matters of value. This skull confronts the cutthroat nature of the diamond industry and serves as a poignant commentary on the capitalist society that underpins it.

This masterpiece is set to shine within the context of the comprehensive exhibition titled "The Weight of Things," encompassing over 40 other artworks ranging from installations and sculptures to paintings. The showcase promises a unique blend of Hirst's oeuvre, including never-before-seen pieces. A rich tapestry of his iconic series, including the evocative Natural History (Formaldehyde Sculptures), the mesmerizing Spin Paintings, thought-provoking Medicine Cabinets, captivating Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, enchanting Cherry Blossoms, and the famed Spot and Butterfly Paintings, will grace the exhibit.

Hirst's career has been marked by a persistent exploration of the intricate interplay between beauty, religion, science, life, and death. His artistic journey ignited in 1988 when he curated the groundbreaking group exhibition "Freeze" during his second year at Goldsmiths College, which catalyzed a transformative wave in British contemporary art.

At the core of his creative journey lies his innovative use of Formaldehyde since 1991, a medium that has allowed him to dissect the relationship between art and science. "The Weight of Things" converges numerous exemplars from this remarkable series. The exhibition offers a multifaceted view of Hirst's creative universe, including the dynamic Spot Paintings, characterized by machine-like precision, and the vivacious Spin Paintings, celebrated for their explosion of color, perpetually infused with an element of randomness.

"The Weight of Things" also unveils the intriguing marriage of legend and imagination within Hirst's marble and bronze sculptures and light boxes from the acclaimed Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable series. Originally presented at Venice's Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in 2017, these works narrate a fictitious saga of an ancient shipwreck, blurring the lines between fact and fiction. The Cherry Blossoms series reinterprets traditional landscape painting with playful irony, employing a fusion of brushstrokes and gestural elements, drawing inspiration from Impressionism, Pointillism, and Action Painting.

As the countdown to October 26, 2023, begins, the anticipation for the MUCA exhibition crescendos, heralding an immersive encounter with Hirst's profound artistic reflections on life's multifaceted dimensions.

More information about this exhibition can be found on MUCA's website.
