Dacia Spring Electric Car Receives Power Boost While Retaining Affordable Price

Dacia has introduced significant upgrades to its Spring electric vehicle for the 2026 model year, enhancing performance while maintaining its status as the most affordable electric car on the market. The compact model now offers more powerful electric motors, aiming to address previous concerns regarding acceleration and driving dynamics.

The updated Dacia Spring replaces its previous 33 kW and 48 kW motors with new options rated at 52 kW and 75 kW. Despite these improvements in output, the vehicle's energy consumption remains efficient, with figures of 12.7 and 12.4 kWh per 100 km respectively. This allows the Spring to deliver a competitive range, with the upgraded lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery offering a capacity of 24.3 kWh. Although the new battery is slightly smaller than its predecessor, the range has been extended from 220 km to up to 225 km based on the WLTP combined cycle.

The enhanced powertrains provide noticeable improvements in acceleration, particularly at higher speeds. Dacia reports that the 75 kW variant accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 6.9 seconds, while the 53 kW model accomplishes the same in 10.3 seconds. These figures mark a substantial improvement compared to the previous versions, helping the Dacia Spring better integrate with fast-moving traffic, especially during merging and overtaking maneuvers. The vehicle's overall weight remains around one tonne, contributing to its agile handling and efficiency.

Charging capabilities have also been upgraded. The revised battery technology enables a DC fast-charging rate of up to 40 kW, an increase from the previous 30 kW. Under optimal conditions, charging from 20% to 80% can be completed in approximately 29 minutes. However, this faster charging option is only available as an add-on for the Expression and Extreme trim levels. The standard AC charging system remains at 7 kW, allowing a full charge from 20% to 100% in just over three hours when using a compatible wallbox. Additionally, the model continues to offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling users to power external devices directly from the vehicle's battery.

Further refinements include technical and design updates intended to improve the overall driving experience. The new battery features a reinforced central section to enhance structural rigidity and optimize weight distribution. Other adjustments encompass a more robust brake booster, the introduction of 15-inch wheels, and aerodynamic upgrades such as new cladding and a redesigned roof spoiler to reduce drag and support lower energy consumption.

Inside, the Dacia Spring benefits from technology enhancements. The Extreme trim comes standard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen media display, offering wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional features include Media Nav Live, which provides connected navigation with real-time traffic updates and regularly updated European maps for up to eight years.

The 52 kW motor is available in Essential and Expression trims, while the 75 kW option is exclusive to the Extreme variant. Dacia has maintained the entry-level price at 16,900 euros, with all variants remaining under 20,000 euros. This pricing ensures the Spring retains its position as the most cost-effective electric vehicle on the market. The manufacturer has yet to announce the official on-sale date for the updated model.
