Cyclone 'Fina' Intensifies to Category 3, Brings Severe Storms to Northern Australia

Sat 22nd Nov, 2025

Cyclone 'Fina' has strengthened off the northern coast of Australia, reaching Category 3 status and prompting severe weather conditions in and around the city of Darwin. The tropical system, located approximately 50 kilometers northwest of Darwin, is generating powerful winds and substantial rainfall that have already impacted the region.

Local authorities have reported that the adverse weather has caused significant structural damage in Darwin. Notably, the roof of the Royal Darwin Hospital partially collapsed, disrupting services within critical areas such as the operations center and the intensive care unit. Emergency teams are working to address the situation and ensure the safety of patients and staff.

In anticipation of worsening conditions, Australia's disaster management officials have urged residents to prioritize their safety by adhering to guidance from authorities and taking precautionary measures against potential hazards. These include the risk of flying debris, downed power lines, and the possibility of localized flooding due to intense rainfall. Emergency services have reinforced that the safest option for most residents is to remain indoors and avoid travel during the height of the storm.

Power outages are likely as the cyclone continues to move through the region, with falling trees posing additional threats to infrastructure and property. The meteorological service has indicated that the most destructive part of the cyclone is projected to pass just north of Darwin overnight. The severe weather is expected to persist into Monday, after which Cyclone 'Fina' is forecast to move into the Timor Sea, potentially weakening as it approaches the coastal areas of the Kimberley region.

Darwin and the Northern Territory have a history of experiencing powerful cyclones. The city has previously endured significant damage from similar events, such as Cyclone 'Marcus' in 2018, which led to widespread power outages and toppled trees. The most devastating storm in the region's history remains Cyclone 'Tracy' in 1974, which nearly destroyed Darwin when it struck as a Category 4 system.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, providing regular updates and maintaining emergency services on alert for any escalation. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and to take all necessary precautions until the cyclone passes and conditions stabilize.
