Authorities in Cuba have initiated discussions with officials from the United States following a fatal shooting involving a high-speed boat near the Cuban coastline. The incident unfolded when Cuban border security intercepted a vessel registered in the United States within Cuban territorial waters, specifically in the vicinity of Cayo Falcones.

According to statements from the Cuban Interior Ministry, the interception occurred early in the morning when border patrol units approached the suspicious vessel for identification. As the patrol neared, individuals onboard the boat reportedly opened fire on the Cuban officers, prompting a return of gunfire. The exchange resulted in the deaths of four out of ten individuals onboard, while several others sustained injuries. A Cuban patrol boat commander was also reported injured during the confrontation.

Authorities stated that all individuals on the intercepted vessel were Cuban nationals residing in the United States. Preliminary investigations suggest that the group intended to enter Cuba illegally, with indications of possible terrorist motives. A search of the boat uncovered a significant cache of weapons and tactical gear, including assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, night vision equipment, bulletproof vests, camouflage clothing, ammunition, and communications devices. Items bearing the insignia of counterrevolutionary organizations were also discovered.

Following the incident, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossio reported that diplomatic communications were underway with US agencies, including the State Department and Coast Guard. US authorities have reportedly expressed willingness to cooperate with Cuban officials in clarifying the circumstances surrounding the event and advancing the investigation.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations. Diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States have been strained since the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and have seen periods of increased pressure, particularly in recent years. Despite these ongoing challenges, both countries have maintained regular contact on matters such as migration and coastal security, facilitating dialogue on critical incidents affecting bilateral interests.

Officials from both sides are currently focused on gathering further evidence and establishing a clear timeline of events leading up to the confrontation. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full intent and affiliations of those involved, as well as to assess any broader security implications for the region. Both governments have reiterated their commitment to upholding maritime security and addressing cross-border criminal activities through continued cooperation and communication.

Authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses. The incident has drawn significant attention due to its potential impact on US-Cuba relations and the ongoing efforts to combat illegal maritime activities in the region.
