Crude Oil Prices Plummet: Declining Costs Not Reflected at Fuel Stations

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

The price of crude oil has fallen sharply following the tariff announcements made by former US President Donald Trump. However, this decline has yet to translate into lower prices at fuel stations across Germany. According to the ADAC, the price of E10 gasoline decreased by only 1.4 cents over the past week, averaging EUR1.689 per liter. Diesel prices saw a similar trend, dropping by just 1.1 cents to EUR1.591 per liter.

In contrast, the crude oil prices have dropped by approximately twelve dollars, marking a significant decline. Typically, crude oil prices are the primary driver of fuel price fluctuations, yet the recent decrease in fuel prices has been much less pronounced than anticipated. The ADAC noted that while various factors influence fuel pricing, the modest drop of over one cent is considerably lower than what is usually expected in response to such a significant fall in crude oil prices.

Following the implementation of the US tariff package, oil prices have continued to decline, reaching their lowest levels since 2021. As of Wednesday morning trading, a barrel of Brent crude oil for June delivery fell by around four percent, equivalent to $2.42, settling at $60.40. By midday, prices dipped below $60 for the first time since February 2021.

The ADAC has expressed concerns regarding the sluggish adjustment of fuel prices, arguing that there is a valid basis for a more substantial decrease. The organization has called on oil companies to promptly pass on the savings from lower oil prices to consumers.

Additionally, the ADAC points to the strengthening euro as another reason prices should decrease. Since crude oil is traded in US dollars, a stronger euro makes the purchase of this essential commodity less expensive for German importers.

In summary, while the crude oil market is experiencing significant price reductions, consumers at German fuel stations are not yet seeing these benefits reflected at the pump. The ADAC continues to advocate for necessary adjustments in fuel pricing to match the current market trends.
