Vaccination Efforts Prevent Over 2.5 Million COVID-19 Deaths Globally

Sat 26th Jul, 2025

Recent data reveal that global vaccination campaigns against COVID-19 have successfully prevented more than 2.5 million deaths between 2020 and 2024. For every 5,400 vaccine doses administered, one life was saved, showcasing the significant impact of these health initiatives.

According to the study published in the JAMA Health Forum, approximately 82% of the lives saved were individuals who had been vaccinated prior to contracting the virus. Notably, 57% of these lives were saved during the omicron variant outbreak, and 90% of those saved were aged 60 and older. Overall, vaccines contributed to a remarkable 14.8 million years of life saved, translating to one year of life preserved for every 900 vaccine doses given.

This comprehensive research, led by Professor Stefania Boccia from Università Cattolica, involved collaboration with researchers from Stanford University. They aimed to analyze a wide array of global data to assess the effectiveness of vaccines in saving lives during the pandemic.

Professor Boccia emphasized the uniqueness of this study, stating that unlike previous analyses, it draws from global data, encompasses the omicron period, and accurately estimates the years of life saved with fewer assumptions regarding pandemic trends.

The research team utilized statistical methods to compare the health outcomes of vaccinated individuals against those who were unvaccinated, thereby quantifying the lives preserved and the years gained as a result of vaccination. Their findings revealed that a significant 76% of the saved years of life were associated with individuals over the age of 60. In contrast, residents of long-term care facilities accounted for only 2% of the total lives saved. Furthermore, children and adolescents contributed minimally, representing just 0.01% of lives saved.

Professor Boccia noted that these estimates offer a more conservative perspective than earlier calculations, which primarily focused on the initial vaccination year, yet clearly illustrate the substantial benefits of COVID-19 vaccinations from 2020 to 2024. The findings underscore that the most significant benefits were realized by older populations, who are typically more vulnerable.

In summary, the findings of this study highlight the critical role of vaccines in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and saving lives, particularly among older adults.
