A significant legal case has emerged as an influencer faces charges after launching a firework into an apartment in Berlin during New Year's celebrations. The 23-year-old, who gained attention for his actions on social media, is set to appear in court today at 9:30 AM. The prosecution alleges that the man intentionally shot a firework rocket into a residential building located in Neukölln, subsequently sharing a video of the event on his Instagram account. The charges against the influencer include attempted aggravated arson, attempted bodily harm, and property damage. The Berlin Regional Court has scheduled four days of hearings, extending until April 16, where initial witnesses are expected to testify on the first day. The accused was apprehended on January 4 at Berlin's airport while attempting to leave the country. He has been held in pre-trial detention due to concerns about potential flight risk. According to the prosecution, the firework rocket landed inside a multi-family residence, leading to damage in the bedroom, including the bed and wallpaper. The occupant of the apartment managed to quickly dispose of the burning remnants of the rocket out of the window, preventing a more significant fire from spreading. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The influencer's Instagram post, which showcased the dangerous stunt, garnered over six million views before it was taken down after approximately 36 hours. Despite the removal of the video, many users on the social media platform X continued to circulate the footage, leading to widespread condemnation of the act. The influencer later issued an apology to those affected by his actions. Prosecutors allege that the man's primary motivation was to generate media attention, disregarding the safety and property of others for his personal gain. This incident is part of a broader trend observed during New Year's celebrations in Berlin, where authorities recorded more than 1,500 incidents typically associated with the holiday. The Berlin public prosecutor's office has opened cases on 89 of these incidents, with investigations still ongoing for many others. In recent weeks, police have intensified their efforts to address such behaviors, conducting searches linked to New Year's-related crimes. For instance, a recent operation targeted eight suspects aged 20 to 25, who are believed to have caused an explosion involving a firework bomb in Schöneberg, resulting in damage to vehicles and buildings, and injuries to five individuals from flying glass shards. Additionally, a 17-year-old has been identified as the alleged perpetrator behind an explosion involving an illegal firework bomb in Tegel, which seriously injured a seven-year-old boy. This case highlights the severity of fireworks-related offenses and the legal responses being enacted to curb such dangerous activities during festive periods.
