Court Orders Rebekah Vardy to Pay £1.4 Million to Coleen Rooney in High-Profile Case

Wed 7th May, 2025

A lengthy legal battle between two prominent figures in the English football world has reached a conclusion, with Rebekah Vardy, wife of former national player Jamie Vardy, ordered by a court to pay £1.4 million (approximately EUR1.65 million) to Coleen Rooney, spouse of legendary striker Wayne Rooney. The dispute, which has drawn considerable media attention, revolved around accusations of betrayal and defamation.

The conflict traces back to 2019, when Coleen Rooney publicly accused Vardy of leaking private information to the British tabloid press. This accusation was made via a series of posts on social media, where Rooney claimed to have conducted a detective-like investigation to uncover the source of the leaks, ultimately leading to her suspicions about Vardy.

The case, dubbed "Wagatha Christie" by the British tabloids--a play on the term for footballers' wives and girlfriends (WaGs) and the famous mystery novelist--escalated when Vardy filed a defamation lawsuit against Rooney, seeking damages for the allegations made against her. However, in July 2022, a judge dismissed Vardy's claims, ruling that Rooney's accusations were, for the most part, truthful. Following this ruling, Vardy was also required to contribute £1.5 million towards Rooney's legal fees.

Despite the unfavorable ruling, Vardy appealed the decision. On Tuesday, as the case was set to resume in London's High Court, Vardy's legal team announced a willingness to settle for £1.2 million. The presiding judge, Mark Whalan, accepted this offer but imposed an additional £200,000 to cover further legal costs incurred by Rooney.

The judge expressed hopes that this ruling would mark the end of this protracted and unfortunate dispute, stating that it has been a long journey for both parties involved.

The saga has not only captivated the public but also highlighted the often tumultuous lives of those connected to the world of professional sports. As the legal proceedings concluded, many observers are left reflecting on the impact of social media and public perception in high-profile disputes.
