Increased Parking Fees Approved for Residents in Cottbus

Cottbus is set to follow in the footsteps of Potsdam by significantly raising parking fees for residents. Starting April 1, the cost for a six-month resident parking permit will rise from EUR15.35 to EUR60, according to a statement from the city administration to the German Press Agency.

The annual parking permit will now cost EUR120 instead of the previous rate of EUR30.70, while a two-year permit will see a jump from EUR55 to EUR240. These fee increases mark the first adjustments since 1993, as confirmed by the city council following a vote on February 26.

In Potsdam, the annual permit will increase to EUR145 from EUR30, with a two-year permit priced at EUR275. This new regulation is expected to come into effect no earlier than July 1. Like Cottbus, Potsdam has not raised its fees since 1993.

While Cottbus and Potsdam are implementing these increases, other cities in the region have no plans for similar adjustments. For instance, in Frankfurt (Oder), the annual fee for a resident parking permit remains at EUR30.70, with no increase currently on the agenda, according to the city administration.

In Brandenburg an der Havel, there is no specific fee structure for resident parking. Instead, the costs align with the federal traffic regulation, which sets the annual fee at EUR30. The city has not exercised its option to create a higher fee structure, and there are no plans to do so in the near future.

The Brandenburg Association of Cities and Municipalities is observing a regional trend towards increased parking fees for residents. This shift is attributed to the challenging financial circumstances many municipalities face, prompting them to explore both cost-saving measures and increased local revenue options, as stated by Managing Director Jens Graf.

Graf further emphasized the association's support for municipalities seeking to enhance their revenue streams, including through adjustments to resident parking fees. As cities evaluate their financial strategies, parking fees are emerging as a key consideration.
