Cottbus and BFC Dynamo Face Uphill Battle in DFB-Pokal

Sat 16th Aug, 2025

In the first round of the DFB-Pokal, both Energie Cottbus and BFC Dynamo find themselves in the role of underdogs, set to challenge two second-division teams. The football clubs from Berlin and Cottbus are eager to surprise their opponents in this prestigious knockout tournament.

BFC Dynamo, currently competing in the Regionalliga, is set to host Bundesliga relegation side VfL Bochum at their home ground, the Sportforum. The match is scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 PM, with a sold-out crowd of 4,705 fans expected to create an electrifying atmosphere. Head coach Dennis Kutrieb emphasized the simplicity of the game, stating that it ultimately comes down to eleven players on each side trying to secure a victory.

Later in the day, at 6:00 PM, Energie Cottbus will face off against another second-tier team, Hannover 96, at the Leag-Energie-Stadion. After facing heavy defeats in previous first-round matches--including a staggering 0-7 loss to SC Paderborn--Cottbus's coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz is hopeful for a different outcome this time. He has stressed the importance of his team bringing the right attitude to the match and is determined to see them engage in a true cup battle, something that was lacking in their prior encounters.

Wollitz believes that only by making the seemingly impossible possible can his team secure a victory against the newly restructured Hanoverians. As both teams prepare for their respective matches, they are fueled by the ambition to defy the odds and make a mark in this year's DFB-Pokal.
