Construction Begins on New Bicycle Street in Berlin-Schöneberg

Wed 16th Jul, 2025

Construction work has officially commenced on the Belziger Straße, which will soon be transformed into a dedicated bicycle street. The initial phase of construction is taking place on the section between Martin-Luther-Straße and Eisenacher Straße, located directly across from the Rathaus Schöneberg. This segment of the road will be closed to general traffic until approximately July 25, allowing access only for emergency vehicles and city cleaning services.

The Belziger Straße spans 1,000 meters and is designed to prioritize cyclists, while still permitting access for motor vehicles belonging to residents. The district office has announced that appropriate signage and road markings will be installed to clearly indicate the bicycle street and the new layout of the roadway.

In addition to the creation of the bicycle street, adjustments will also be made to the parking arrangements. The current practice of cross-parking, which may not ensure adequate visibility and spacing, will be replaced with parallel parking.

Furthermore, three pedestrian-friendly modifications will be made along the Belziger Straße. At the intersection with Gothaer Straße, three curb extensions have been constructed to improve pedestrian access, complemented by the installation of bicycle parking facilities. Additionally, curb extensions were added at the Vorbergstraße intersection in late 2024, alongside the extension of the two-way bike path.

This year, further modifications are planned at the junction with Merseburger Straße, where four curb extensions will be marked and secured with bollards and bicycle parking spaces.

Nearby, the Monumentenstraße is also set to undergo conversion into a bicycle street, as confirmed by the district office. Plans for both the Belziger Straße and Monumentenstraße were presented during an informational session held in early April.
