Commerzbank Secures Lease for New Skyscraper in Frankfurt
Tue 18th Feb, 2025
Commerzbank, the second-largest private bank in Germany, has announced its plans to lease a new skyscraper in Frankfurt's financial district, expanding its presence in the city. The bank has signed a 15-year lease agreement with Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen (Helaba) for the Central Business Tower (CBT), which is currently under construction. Starting in 2028, Commerzbank will occupy more than 73,000 square meters across 52 floors in this new high-rise, which is set to create around 3,200 job positions. The CBT will stand at 205 meters tall and will be entirely leased to Commerzbank, serving as a crucial operational hub alongside the bank's existing headquarters, the iconic Commerzbank Tower. Sabine Minarsky, a member of Commerzbank's executive board, emphasized that the new building will be a significant anchor for the bank's activities in downtown Frankfurt. Although Commerzbank has been approached by Italian banking group Unicredit regarding its current tower at Kaiserplatz, the bank intends to maintain its presence there. The existing tower, which reaches 259 meters and is the tallest building in Frankfurt, will continue to house essential functions and departments of the bank. With this strategic move, Commerzbank aims to consolidate its operations, which have been spread across multiple locations in Frankfurt and nearby Eschborn, into these two prominent buildings. This consolidation is expected to enhance operational efficiency and facilitate better collaboration among departments. In recent years, Commerzbank has undergone significant changes, including the sale of its skyscraper at Kaiserplatz to the life insurance division of South Korea's Samsung conglomerate, after which it became a tenant there. The bank has not yet disclosed which additional properties it plans to relinquish as part of this new arrangement. The development of the CBT is part of a broader trend in Frankfurt's skyline, where financial institutions are investing in modern office spaces to attract and retain talent in an increasingly competitive market. The new tower is anticipated to be a key player in this landscape, providing state-of-the-art facilities to support Commerzbank's growth and operational needs in the coming years.
