In a recent operation, the Colombian Navy intercepted an unmanned submarine off the coast near Santa Marta, believed to be designed for drug smuggling activities. This unique vessel was equipped with a Starlink antenna, suggesting a potential shift in tactics among drug cartels.

According to reports from various news agencies, the submarine drone was found to be unoccupied and allegedly intended for a test run rather than an active smuggling operation. The Colombian Navy stated that the construction and operation of submarines for drug trafficking can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 14 years. These vessels typically do not operate as fully submerged submarines; instead, they remain partially submerged to evade radar detection.

Colombian drug cartels have previously employed manned submarines to transport drugs across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

For instance, Indian authorities recently confiscated an unmanned, Starlink-controlled vessel near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, highlighting the growing trend of utilizing innovative technologies in drug trafficking.
