Coca-Cola Initiates Extensive Recall Across Europe Due to Chlorate Levels
In a significant move, Coca-Cola's European bottling division has announced a large-scale recall of its beverages, including popular products like Coke and Sprite, in response to concerns over elevated chlorate levels that could pose health risks.
The recall affects various products distributed across several countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Luxembourg, with distribution occurring since November. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in Belgium indicated that while they do not have an exact figure, the quantity of beverages involved is substantial.
Chlorate, a chemical that can be found in food, typically originates from chlorine disinfectants that are commonly utilized in water treatment processes and food production. A report from the European Food Safety Authority in 2015 noted that prolonged exposure to chlorate could pose potential health risks, particularly for children, especially those who might have mild to moderate iodine deficiencies.
Despite these concerns, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has stated that the majority of affected products have already been removed from retail locations, and they are actively working to eliminate any remaining stock from the market. The company's French division also reported that independent assessments indicated the likelihood of associated health risks related to the products in question is deemed very low. Furthermore, no consumer complaints have been received regarding this matter.
Although some batches of Coke and Fuze Tea were delivered in France, the recall does not currently extend to the French market. The company expressed regret over the recall, which was prompted by routine quality checks at their production facility in Ghent.
The recall specifically targets products with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE, which include brands like Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has assured that they are in communication with relevant authorities in each affected market to manage the situation effectively.
