Chemnitz Hospital Establishes Support System for Sexual Violence Victims

The Chemnitz Hospital has introduced a confidential evidence collection service specifically designed for women who have experienced sexual violence. This initiative aims to create a safe space for victims to have their evidence and traces secured in a protected environment, addressing the concerns many face when considering reporting the incident to the police due to feelings of shame, fear, or uncertainty.

According to hospital officials, the evidence collection process provides a crucial foundation for any potential legal actions in the future and enhances the likelihood of successfully prosecuting the perpetrators. Medical staff will be responsible for the confidential collection of evidence such as DNA samples and documenting any injuries without necessitating an immediate police report.

Strict confidentiality is assured, maintaining the anonymity of the victims under medical confidentiality laws. Medical professionals are prohibited from filing a police report against the wishes of the victims, reinforcing the service's focus on providing support and options for those affected.

Evidence collected will be stored for up to one year, giving victims the flexibility to decide whether to pursue legal action during that period. This service is exclusively available to women, and Dr. Johanna Rose, a senior physician at the hospital's Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, emphasized that this confidential evidence collection alleviates the pressure on victims, allowing them to contemplate their next steps in a more relaxed manner.

The hospital underscores the importance of timely evidence collection following an incident of sexual violence. Victims can access the service at any time, day or night, and are encouraged to present themselves at the hospital's emergency room with the clothing worn during the incident, ideally without having showered. Upon arrival, the first step involves an initial medical consultation, during which the details of the incident will be documented, followed by a physical and gynecological examination.
