Issues Arise with E-Prescription Implementation in Germany

Mon 21st Jul, 2025

The implementation of electronic prescriptions (E-prescriptions) in Germany continues to face significant challenges, as recent reports indicate recurring disruptions in their processing within pharmacies. This has prompted the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA) to formally address these issues in a communication to Gematik, the agency responsible for the operation of the national telematic infrastructure.

In her letter to Florian Fuhrmann, the managing director of Gematik, Claudia Korf, who oversees economic affairs at ABDA, has requested detailed information regarding the frequency and duration of these disruptions. The aim is to better understand the impact on pharmacies and the services they provide to patients.

A spokesperson for Gematik clarified that the reported outages were not system-wide but affected specific components and services of the telematic infrastructure. He assured that all disruptions had been resolved and that the services have since been stable.

Gematik's position emphasizes that many of the interruptions stem from issues related to the individual service providers rather than the telematic infrastructure as a whole. Typically, these providers are responsible for rectifying the issues promptly, although the spokesperson acknowledged that some more complex cases may take longer to resolve despite the ongoing efforts of all involved parties.

In response to these incidents, Gematik has initiated immediate technical analyses to identify the causes of the disruptions, working closely with the relevant stakeholders. There is a clear commitment to enhancing the reliability of the telematic infrastructure and the applications linked to it. This includes implementing technical improvements such as monitoring systems, early error detection, and redundancy measures, alongside organizational advancements in incident management and collaboration with industry partners.

As of now, a response from Gematik to the ABDA's inquiries is still pending, leaving uncertainty regarding future improvements and assurances for pharmacies.
