CDU urges end to coalition talks in Berlin amid security concerns

Thu 29th Oct, 2026

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Berlin has called for a halt to ongoing coalition negotiations between the Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens, and the Left Party. This demand follows revelations about security concerns of Elif Eralp, a prominent figure from the Left Party, who has expressed fears about Islamist sympathisers.

Stefan Evers, the acting head of the CDU in Berlin, urged the SPD and Greens to reconsider their coalition talks with the Left Party in light of recent security concerns. Evers, who was the CDU's leading candidate in the Berlin state elections held on September 20, stated in a report that the parties should "finally pull the emergency brake." He expressed serious concern over Eralp's ability to guarantee public safety given her own reported fears regarding elements within her party.

Eralp’s concerns revolve around the appearance of a known Hamas sympathiser, Ibrahim Ibrahim, at a recent election party event hosted by the Left Party in Berlin's Neukölln district. Her fears were detailed in an internal document, where she indicated that both she and her husband felt threatened by such individuals.

The CDU's call for a cessation of coalition discussions adds pressure to the politically charged atmosphere in Berlin as the parties weigh their options for forming the next regional government. Evers insists that the CDU is ready to participate in government and continues to extend a hand to the SPD and Greens for collaboration.

Meanwhile, Steffen Krach, the chair of the Berlin SPD, remains committed to entering into a coalition with the Left Party, despite the challenges. In comments made to RTL/n-tv, Krach emphasized the importance of strong policies on internal affairs, economy, and socially just housing as part of his motivations for the coalition. He acknowledged the need for trust between the potential coalition partners and indicated that the coming weeks would be pivotal in assessing whether the trust and stability required for a successful coalition exist.

As it stands, the SPD and Greens have already agreed to commence coalition discussions with the Left Party. The decision from the Left Party to move forward with these talks will be finalized during a party congress scheduled for Saturday in Berlin. The internal discord within the Left Party comes at a time of heightened debate over the balance between ideological values and practical governance in the capital city.

The outcome of the coalition talks is crucial, as it will determine the political landscape in Berlin for the coming years. The focus remains on finding a stable government capable of addressing critical issues without being swayed by external threats or pressures. As parties continue discussions, the political environment in Berlin remains uncertain, with significant attention on how security concerns are addressed in the context of these coalition negotiations.

The developments in Berlin are being closely watched as they carry implications for both regional and national politics, particularly in the context of how parties handle sensitive security issues alongside coalition-building efforts. Both the CDU and other parties involved appear to be navigating a complex political terrain as they seek to form Berlin's next government.
