Wismar/Corner Brook - A significant maritime incident unfolded off the coast of Newfoundland on Saturday morning as the cargo vessel MSC Baltic III, constructed in 2003 in Wismar, ran aground during severe weather conditions. The vessel, measuring 207 meters in length and 30 meters in width, was reported to have experienced a power failure while navigating through winds reaching force twelve and waves as high as six meters.

The Canadian Coast Guard responded promptly to the emergency call and successfully airlifted all 20 crew members from the ship without any injuries. The adverse weather conditions prevented the crew from dropping anchor, leading to the grounding of the vessel west of Lark Harbour.

Following the crew's rescue, the focus shifted towards the salvage operations for the stranded cargo ship. A spokesperson from the Canadian Coast Guard highlighted the challenges posed by the ongoing stormy weather, complicating recovery efforts. The exact cause of the grounding and the extent of the incident remain unclear at this time.

The MSC Baltic III sails under the Liberian flag, and its owner has expressed a cooperative attitude regarding the situation. A team from the salvage company hired by the owner is expected to arrive in the area to assess the circumstances and formulate a plan for the ship's recovery.

This incident underscores the risks faced by maritime operations during extreme weather events, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response strategies in ensuring maritime safety.
