Thu 27th Mar, 2025

Canon has introduced two new cameras designed specifically for content creators: the PowerShot V1, a compact 4K camera, and the EOS R50 V, a system camera featuring advanced video capabilities.

The PowerShot V1 targets mobile content creators, while the EOS R50 V is aimed at ambitious videographers and production teams seeking enhanced creative control in a compact and versatile setup. Both models boast improved video features and user-friendly handling compared to their predecessors, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III and EOS R50. They are equipped with Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology, ensuring precise autofocus.

Pro-Level Features for Content Creators

Both the PowerShot V1 and EOS R50 V come with enhanced video functionalities. The PowerShot V1 is a compact 4K camera featuring a 1.4-inch sensor with 22 megapixels. It includes a built-in 16-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 lens with a five-stop optical image stabilizer, making it ideal for on-the-go shooting. Its active cooling system allows for prolonged 4K recording times, while a quick switch enables seamless transitions between photo and video modes. The camera can capture bursts at up to 30 frames per second, with a mechanical shutter speed of 1/2000 seconds and an electronic shutter speed of 1/16,000 seconds.

The EOS R50 V builds on the foundation of the original EOS R50, expanding its features for videographers. It includes the RF mount for interchangeable lenses and an APS-C sensor with 24 megapixels, along with a tiltable touchscreen. Additionally, the camera offers a second tripod mount for vertical shooting and a dedicated button for quick access to streaming functions. Users can also view aspect ratios for various recording formats directly on the screen.

Advanced Video Capabilities

Both cameras support advanced video features, such as Canon Log 3, which enables matching footage from multiple cameras while maximizing dynamic range. This functionality is essential for productions aiming for a cinematic look and for setups with multiple cameras.

The PowerShot V1 supports 4K recording at 60 frames per second and Full HD at 120 frames per second for slow-motion shots. Its built-in microphone features noise suppression for clear audio, with audio levels monitored via a headphone jack. The camera can also facilitate video calls and livestreaming via USB, and it connects to smartphones through the Canon Camera Connect app, either wired or wirelessly.

The EOS R50 V not only includes Canon Log 3 but also allows for user-defined color profiles, and it supports four-channel audio for professional sound recording during interviews or podcasts. The camera can capture 4K video with 6K oversampling at 30 frames per second, standard 4K at 60 frames per second, and Full HD at 120 frames per second. Additionally, it is compatible with the Canon Live Switcher Mobile App, making it easier to conduct multi-camera streaming with customizable layouts and direct streaming to platforms like YouTube or Facebook from mobile devices.

New Kit Lens

Alongside the EOS R50 V, Canon introduces the RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens, designed for smooth power-zoom transitions controlled via the camera's zoom lever. This lens features optical image stabilization and incorporates UD and aspherical elements, along with Super Spectra coating for optimized sharpness.

The PowerShot V1 will be available starting April 2025 at a price of EUR1,000. A Creator Kit, which includes a grip tripod and memory card, will retail for EUR1,030. The EOS R50 V will be offered as a body-only option for EUR760 or as a kit with the RF-S 14-30mm lens for EUR1,000. A Creator Kit with additional accessories will be available for EUR1,050.
