Authorities in British Columbia have identified the individual responsible for the recent mass shooting at a local high school in Tumbler Ridge as an 18-year-old woman with a documented history of mental health concerns. The incident began at the suspect's family residence, where her mother and 11-year-old stepbrother were fatally shot. These initial killings were discovered after another family member notified neighbors, prompting police intervention.
The perpetrator then proceeded to the nearby high school, where she opened fire, resulting in the deaths of six individuals: five students aged 12 and 13, and one teacher. Police clarified that previous reports had indicated nine fatalities, but the accurate death toll stands at eight after confirming that a victim previously believed to have died had survived after being airlifted to a hospital.
Law enforcement officials reported that the suspect was found deceased at the school from an apparent self-inflicted wound. A long gun and a modified handgun were recovered at the scene. Investigations have revealed that the suspect was well-known to local police due to multiple past interventions related to her mental health. Officers had responded on several occasions to the family's residence and, under the Mental Health Act, had taken her to a hospital for assessment and care. During these visits, weapons had previously been seized from the home and later returned. None of the firearms recovered were registered in the suspect's name, and while she once possessed a valid gun license, it had expired prior to the incident.
Officials have emphasized that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the victims at the school were specifically targeted. The suspect had dropped out of the high school approximately four years prior to the event. The motive for the attack remains undetermined, as no suicide note or explanatory message has been found by authorities. Police have also confirmed that the individual was transgender, having transitioned to female socially and publicly over the course of the last six years.
Tumbler Ridge, located in a remote area of British Columbia, has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Local and provincial officials are continuing their investigation into the circumstances leading up to the attack, focusing on the suspect's background, the source of the firearms, and any possible warning signs. The incident has renewed discussions in Canada about gun regulations, mental health support, and the challenges faced by small communities in responding to such crises.
In the aftermath, community members have placed flowers and tributes at the school in memory of the victims. Support services have been made available to students, staff, and families affected by the shooting. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any additional information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
