Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD is intensifying its efforts to establish a significant presence in the German vehicle market. As part of its European strategy, the company is implementing a comprehensive plan involving local production, an expanding dealership network, and the deployment of proprietary fast-charging infrastructure throughout Germany.
BYD has initiated construction of a production facility in Hungary and is in negotiations with several hundred European suppliers to strengthen its supply chain. The manufacturer aims to operate 350 sales and service locations across Germany by the end of the year, a substantial increase from a year prior. This strategy is aimed at ensuring that most customers are no more than 15 to 20 minutes away from a BYD dealership, addressing consumer expectations for convenience in vehicle purchasing and servicing.
A core component of BYD's expansion involves the rollout of its Flash-Charging technology. This innovation allows vehicle batteries to charge from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes, significantly reducing charging times and enhancing the practicality of electric vehicles. The technology will first be introduced in the new premium Denza models, with plans to integrate it into additional BYD vehicles in the near future.
To support this rapid charging capability, BYD is constructing its own network of fast-charging stations, with at least 300 planned installations across Germany. The first of these stations is already operational in Stuttgart, and additional sites are scheduled to be established along major highways and national routes. This infrastructure is intended to make the charging process as convenient and swift as traditional refueling, thereby encouraging broader adoption of electric vehicles.
The expansion is not limited to sales and infrastructure. BYD's new manufacturing facility in Hungary is expected to begin operations this year, initially producing models such as the Dolphin Surf and ATTO 2. The plant is anticipated to have an annual production capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles, and ongoing discussions with around 600 European suppliers are underway to reinforce the company's supply chain. The establishment of this facility is projected to create up to 10,000 jobs across Europe, contributing to the region's automotive industry and supporting local economies.
In terms of market presence, BYD currently holds an estimated 2% share of the German automotive market, offering 12 different models that range from compact city cars to larger seven-seater vehicles. Competitive pricing, especially for hybrid and electric models, is supported by government incentives and company discounts. The recently launched premium Denza brand aims to compete directly with established German manufacturers in the high-end segment, offering vehicles equipped with advanced features and the latest charging technology.
BYD's approach differs from many other international competitors by emphasizing internal development and production, reducing reliance on external suppliers and increasing operational independence. The company's goal is to be recognized as a European manufacturer within the next five years, reflecting its commitment to local engagement and long-term growth in the region.
Despite its ambitious expansion, BYD does not currently plan to establish a production facility in Germany, choosing instead to focus on scaling up operations in Hungary before considering further investments. The company views its European strategy as a long-term endeavor, emphasizing steady and sustained growth rather than rapid, short-term gains.
Founded in 1995 in Shenzhen, China, BYD transitioned from battery manufacturing into the automotive sector in 2003. Since 2022, the company has concentrated exclusively on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as commercial transport solutions. BYD entered the German market at the end of 2022 and established a local subsidiary in 2025. Globally, the company employs approximately 900,000 people, including a significant number of engineers dedicated to innovation and product development. In Germany, the workforce is expected to grow from 150 to 350 as the expansion progresses.
With its multi-faceted approach encompassing local manufacturing, technological innovation, extensive dealer coverage, and a dedicated charging network, BYD is positioning itself as a major contender in the German and broader European automotive markets.
