Altercation on Long-Distance Bus Leads to Attempted Homicide Investigation

An incident aboard a long-distance coach traveling on the A9 motorway in Upper Franconia has resulted in police investigating an attempted homicide. The confrontation began when a dispute arose between two passengers regarding the repeated adjustment of a seat backrest.

The coach, which was en route from Poland to Italy, became the scene of escalating tensions when a 38-year-old passenger allegedly continued to recline his seat, disturbing the 46-year-old individual seated behind him. According to official reports, the situation intensified after the older passenger addressed the discomfort caused by the seat adjustments. In response, the 38-year-old is said to have physically assaulted the other passenger, striking him in the face and causing minor injuries.

Efforts by a substitute driver to intervene temporarily separated the two men. However, the altercation did not conclude there. As the bus approached the vicinity of Himmelkron in the Kulmbach district, the younger man reportedly retrieved a knife from his backpack and threatened the 46-year-old passenger. The presence of the weapon further heightened the risk to those on board.

A third passenger, aged 25, recognized the severity of the situation and acted decisively. Demonstrating considerable courage, he managed to disarm the suspect, sustaining minor hand injuries in the process. The bus was brought to an immediate stop near Bayreuth, where local law enforcement officers apprehended the 38-year-old suspect. Subsequent investigations revealed that the individual was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, prompting authorities to order a blood sample. The knife was secured as evidence.

The suspect now faces serious legal consequences, as officials have initiated proceedings on suspicion of attempted homicide. A magistrate has placed the accused in pre-trial detention pending further investigation. No additional injuries among passengers or staff have been reported.
