Significant Rise in Burglary Rates in Berlin During First Half of 2025

Mon 18th Aug, 2025

The Berlin police have reported a substantial increase in the number of residential burglaries in the city during the first half of 2025, revealing a worrying trend compared to previous years. According to a recent analysis by the authorities, the total number of burglaries has reached 4,617, marking an increase of approximately 21.4 percent from the same period in 2024, when 3,804 incidents were recorded.

This rise is not attributed to isolated incidents, as a month-by-month breakdown demonstrates consistent increases across five of the six months analyzed. Notably, only April showed a slight decrease in burglaries, with 608 incidents compared to 630 in the same month of the previous year.

When viewed over a two-year span, the figures highlight a troubling increase, with the number of burglaries in the first half of 2023 recorded at 4,026. This indicates an overall rise of around 14.7 percent over the two-year period, emphasizing a persistent upward trend in residential crimes.

Interestingly, while summer months typically see a rise in burglary incidents due to the vacation habits of many residents, the statistics for the summer holidays in 2023 and 2024 showed only a slight increase compared to non-holiday periods. The police have yet to release comprehensive data for the summer of 2025.

In contrast, winter appears to be the preferred season for burglars, with increased activity noted during the darker months. Authorities suggest that the lack of daylight during winter provides cover for criminal activities, leading to higher burglary rates during this season.

To address this alarming trend, residents are being urged to take precautions to secure their homes effectively. Enhanced security measures and community awareness may play crucial roles in combating this rise in burglaries.

As the police continue to investigate and respond to these trends, there is a growing call for increased vigilance among Berlin's residents. Ensuring home security and reporting suspicious activities are critical steps in protecting neighborhoods from potential threats.
