UK Imposes Sanctions on Israeli West Bank Settlements, Israel Retaliates

The United Kingdom has introduced sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, alleging that Israel's government has ignored the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians carried out by settlers.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the measures as the start of a different approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that both denounces injustice and takes concrete action rather than merely condemning it verbally.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected the accusation, calling it a baseless and outrageous claim. In response, Israel announced retaliatory steps, including the closure of the UK's consulate in East Jerusalem.

The British sanctions prohibit the import of goods produced in the settlements and also target companies and individuals involved in supporting settlement expansion.

The measures were introduced jointly with France and Canada. In a shared statement, the three countries said the move represents a significant shift in their approach toward safeguarding the prospects of a two-state solution.
