Trump says threat prompted removal of US bombers from RAF Fairford

US President Donald Trump has said American bombers were withdrawn from RAF Fairford due to what he described as some threats to the base.

The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday that it had moved its bombers, believed to be around a dozen B-1 aircraft, from RAF Fairford back to their home bases in the United States.

Speaking to reporters on Monday as he left for Nebraska, Trump indicated that the US had been aware of a threat, which led to the decision to relocate the bombers.

Earlier that day, a Downing Street spokesperson maintained that RAF Fairford remained secure, referencing Trump's remarks from the previous week in which he had commended the UK's police, defence and security services regarding the base.

Trump's statement appears to support earlier reports from US media suggesting that a new security threat prompted the bombers' removal, following an incident on 27 September when police were called to investigate three suspicious vehicles spotted near the airbase.
