Trump Claims Russia, Ukraine Agree to Halt Energy Strikes

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that a diplomatic breakthrough had been reached between Russia and Ukraine, though his claim was unverified and drew only a cautious response from Kyiv, with no immediate reaction from the Kremlin.

The statement comes as both Moscow and Kyiv have signalled willingness to continue US-mediated talks, which have made little progress during Trump's second term in office.

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told DW he would be open to meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami in December, should reports of Putin's possible attendance prove true.

Trump indicated that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to stop targeting each other's energy infrastructure. In a post on Truth Social, he or his team wrote that Ukraine had agreed not to strike Russian energy sites, and that Russia had agreed to do the same.

The post went on to attribute the high global price of diesel mainly to the Russia-Ukraine war rather than to Iran, part of a series of posts that appeared to downplay rising US oil prices and any connection to Trump's actions concerning Iran, as well as broader domestic economic pressures.

Russian officials had not commented on the claim at the time of publication.
