DENVER -- A shooting incident at Evergreen High School in suburban Denver left two students injured as a 16-year-old suspect opened fire with a revolver. The attack occurred on Wednesday, prompting chaos as students either fled the scene or sought shelter.

According to law enforcement officials, the shooter, identified as Desmond Holly, had reportedly been influenced by an extremist network, although details regarding this radicalization remain unclear. Following the shooting, Holly turned the gun on himself and was later pronounced dead.

The two victims, one shot inside the school and the other outside, were reported to be in critical condition. Investigators are looking into whether Holly had any prior connections to the victims or if the shooting was random.

Eyewitness accounts describe a frantic scene as students reacted to the gunfire. Some reported hearing multiple rounds being fired, with the shooter reloading during the assault. Fortunately, secured doors within the school prevented Holly from accessing certain areas where students had taken refuge.

Authorities stated that the school resource officer was on medical leave at the time of the incident, and two part-time officers who share the duties were not present. This has raised questions regarding the school's preparedness for such emergencies. Holly was reported to have been carrying a significant amount of ammunition, and surveillance cameras tracked his movements throughout the facility.

In the aftermath of the shooting, officials confirmed that while no responding officers discharged their weapons, they were able to locate the shooter within five minutes of arriving on the scene. The school district has emphasized its ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures in light of past tragedies, including the infamous Columbine High School shooting.

The community has expressed shock and grief following the incident, with many parents and residents coming together to lay flowers and offer support to the victims' families. The family of one of the injured students, Matthew Silverstone, has publicly thanked the community for their outpouring of support and requested privacy as they focus on his recovery.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the suspect's home and personal belongings. There are also discussions about whether Holly's parents might face legal consequences for their son's access to the firearm. The tragedy has reignited conversations about school safety and the need for effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
