Sheinbaum Says She Held 'Very Good' Call With Trump Amid Trade Talks

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said she had a positive telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump this week, as the two countries continue negotiating a bilateral trade agreement.

Speaking at her regular morning press briefing on Friday, Sheinbaum said the call took place on Wednesday but gave no further details about its content.

She said talks between Mexico and the United States were moving toward a possible agreement, and expressed hope that any deal would lead to lower US tariffs on Mexican goods. She said her government was working to secure an outcome that respects Mexican sovereignty while serving the country's best interests, and that officials were pushing to finalise a deal as soon as possible.

Mexico and the US are aiming to reach a bilateral trade agreement ahead of the US midterm elections in November, with many American voters linking rising prices partly to Trump's tariffs on numerous trading partners.

According to Sheinbaum, Mexico is seeking relief from tariffs affecting sectors including steel, aluminium and automobiles.

Mexico and Canada are both part of the USMCA free trade agreement with the United States, which over recent decades has fostered close economic ties between the three countries and shielded most exports from US tariffs. However, Trump has imposed heavy tariffs on some of these sectors, leaving Mexico and Canada among the nations adjusting to Washington's shifting trade policies.
