Kyiv hit by missiles hours after Russia signals readiness to resume Ukraine talks
Ukraine's capital was struck by a fresh missile attack overnight, just hours after Russia indicated it was willing in principle to return to peace negotiations and US President Donald Trump said the world was closer than ever to ending the war.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said several houses were damaged in the strikes on Wednesday night, with six people injured.
The attack coincided with a renewed diplomatic effort involving Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Wednesday, a day after meeting Ukraine's president.
Three-way negotiations had been suspended since February, a period during which Russia escalated its strikes as Ukraine faced shortages of Western-supplied missile interceptors.
Trump said he had recently discussed ending the conflict with Putin and believed the two sides were nearing a resolution, describing the current moment as possibly the closest they had come to a settlement.
Despite repeated assurances that he could bring the war to a close, Trump has yet to achieve a breakthrough in ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
