Powerful Earthquake Strikes Kyushu, Japan; Dozens Missing After Shopping Mall Collapse

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu, causing significant structural damage and resulting in dozens of people missing or injured. Authorities reported that the shaking led to the partial collapse of the second floor of a major shopping center in Kashima Town, trapping several individuals inside. Emergency crews have begun rescue operations, and some people have already been recovered and transported to hospitals for treatment.

The epicenter was located approximately 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, affecting the Kumamoto prefecture and its neighboring regions. In the immediate aftermath, a tsunami advisory was issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas along the western coasts, but the alert was withdrawn within two hours by the Japan Meteorological Agency after assessments indicated no significant threat.

Local officials stated that around 20 to 30 employees of the shopping center remain unaccounted for. Hospitals in the affected area, including Yatsushiro and Kumamoto cities, reported treating nearly 90 individuals with quake-related injuries. The full extent of casualties and those trapped is still being determined as search and rescue efforts continue.

The earthquake also caused widespread disruption to infrastructure. There were reports of damage to roads, bridges, and buildings, along with power outages and fires. Rail services, including the high-speed Shinkansen and local trains, were suspended across Kyushu as authorities conducted safety inspections. The Aso Kumamoto Airport closed its runway, citing ongoing safety concerns with no immediate timeline for reopening.

The Japanese Defense Ministry deployed aircraft to survey the affected areas and assist with response efforts. In addition to the shopping center collapse, a train derailed at Yatsushiro station, and damage was reported to the historic stone walls of Kumamoto Castle. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed that no major public facilities or critical infrastructure had suffered catastrophic damage. Furthermore, the Nuclear Regulation Authority assured the public that all nearby nuclear power plants were operating normally, with no abnormalities detected following the earthquake.

Many residents compared the event to the devastating Kumamoto earthquake that occurred a decade ago, which resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Officials from the Japan Meteorological Agency advised residents to remain vigilant, warning that additional aftershocks could occur in the coming days.
